Hoecake Recipe

Originally Hoecake was made of Indian meal, water, and salt, sometimes baked in a fireplace on the blade of a hoe. To make 12 hoecakes we need the following ingredients;-

  • 1½ cups unrefined yellow cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups boiling water or more
  • ¼ cup oil
  • 2 eggs
How To Make Hoecake
  • Combine dry ingredients.
  • Add all at once to boiling water. Stir until batter clings together in a ball, pulling away form the sides of the kettle. Remove from heat.
  • Add oil and beat.
  • Add unbeaten eggs, one at a time, beating briskly after each addition until completely blended.
  • Drop by tablespoonfuls onto lightly oiled cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 400° F. until delicately browned (about 30 minutes).
